Jack was invited to speak on Phoenix Radio FM on 19th May 2023 to talk about his composition, musical life, and the concert on the following day. You can take a listen via the link below!
British composer and pianist Jack Marks is currently in his 4th year studying composition and piano at the Royal College of Music. Jacks music embraces a wide variety of styles including late romanticism, neoclassicism and jazz. Most recently he has worked with Astral Quartet writing a piece dedicated to them called Double Yellow Lines. The piece is divided into six sections: a prelude, 4 movements, and finale. Each of the 4 movements represent each member of the quartet and he used ‘the big 5’ personality traits test to determine the character of each movement. You can also find Jacks music in the Royal College of Music’s new museum. His piece Baroque Blues was used to showcase the opening of the museum. As suggested by the title, this piece incorporates very jazzy and bluesy harmony but in an ensemble of baroque instruments. Earlier in Jacks life he had his orchestral work Valse Bercuese performed by both the Brentwood Philharmonic Orchestra (under the baton of David Pickthall) and the Brentwood School Orchestra (under the baton of Florian Cooper). This piece is delicate and uses a musical sound world similar to the romantic and impressionistic eras. Since being at college Jack has further developed his orchestral writing and had two pieces workshopped by RCM orchestras: Reflections and Launch. In the future Jacks ambitions are to have many more solo, chamber, and orchestral works performed and recorded, as well playing his own compositions on the piano. He looks forward to his final year of college and hopes you like the music!
